My Wired Hiatus

A few weeks ago, I discovered The Wire. From then on, until I ran out of episodes, time that would have otherwise been spent reading, updating this blog, or writing elsewhere, was spent glued to the computer screen watching episodes, analyzing them, and reading reviews. It was a very sad period for my social life, but an enlightening experience as a TV fangirl. Not that anybody asked, but Season 4 of The Wire is the best season of television that I've ever seen, and while I'm at a loss of what the Hell to do with myself now that I've run out of episodes, I can't bring myself to start on another show just yet.

(How exactly somebody who claims to be a TV dweeb went this long without watching The Wire is beyond explanation. I'm a bit of a farce.)

In between episodes of The Wire, life has just sort of happened. The eclipse came and went, though the combination of cloudy skies in Seomyeon and my digital camera of questionable quality resulted in poor evidence of this. I've lifted the following photo from my friend Melisa, who had a better view in Minam (my old stomping ground). Also, probably better photography skills.

I tried to blame it on the camera, but compared and found that our cameras are of similar quality. I now suspect that my camera is faulty, and thus, still largely responsible.

My failure to notice when the eclipse was actually happening may also have played a role.

I totally feel you here. I started watching it after the umpteenth interview on NPR... Once I started I couldn't stop. The video salesperson at Barnes and Noble thought I was nuts because I finished Season 1 in one day and Season 2 in two days. Of course, after I finished it, I just re-started the whole thing.

Who was your favorite? I loved D'Angelo and was so sad when he was killed. I liked Cutty too. I wish they had done an ending for him.

I'm leaving for Korea on Saturday, and The Wire is definitely going to be on my computer.

Long time reader, first time commenting...

I agree with you about The Wire 100%. Best tv show ever made. Omar is the most interesting character I have ever seen.

Check out this book ."Off the books" by Sudhir Alladi Venkatesh. It's a real life story of the drug game/urban poor.

I'll gladly lend it to you. I'll be going to Korea in September.

As an "Emmy" voter, I really can't understand why my brethren can't get behind this quality program; however, last year's winner "Mad Men" is deserving in its own right. It is nearly picture perfect. This year, though, my vote went to "Breaking Bad," a scary and realistic look at what one might do when life is at its bleakest.

There is a bit of an elitist popularity contest with the "Emmys" as shows hugely popular with the general public (CSI, NCIS, House, Two and a Half Men, American Idol, etc.) lose out to those with miniscule audiences in comparison.

Here are some couple quality shows that you might have missed over the last few years if you decide to invest some time in some truly great television programs again: "Farscape, Deadwood, Firefly, Wonderfalls, Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice, and Eureka," from the U.S. and "Coupling, Bodies, My Family, and Green Wing" from the U.K. I also enjoyed the first few seasons of "McLeod's Daughters" from Australia and the show "Being Eve" from New Zealand.

adamgn - I had a few favourites. Among the cops, I always liked Kima. What she did in Season 5 was understandable. Among the junkies, obviously Bubbles (who was responsible for one of the most heartwrenching and one of the most heartwarming moments of the series). Of the Barksdale crew, I came to like D'Angelo, though not really until the end of Season 1. Bodie, I came to like after the Barksdale crew went down, but I thoroughly despised both him and Poot by the end of Season 1, for obvious reasons. And of course, I always loved seeing Omar on screen. What a character. I could go on, but I'll stop there for now.

Have a good flight to Korea!

corytimbits - Omar, indeed. There is nothing I could say that would give that character proper justice. He just has to be seen. My favourite Omar scene is probably when Levi cross examines him in court, though the time he wanders to the store in pajamas, unarmed, and comes home with a bag of drugs was pretty comical.

Thanks for the book suggestion. I'd definitely be interested in that.

Good luck in your last Korealess month!

John from Daejeon - I'm glad to hear that at least one voter got behind the program. I've always seen the Emmy's as flawed, but after seeing The Wire it's clear just how broken they are.

I caught the pilot of Mad Men on the plane trip ... either here or one of my times going home... and I was impressed. Mad Men is definitely on my short list of series to watch, it just hasn't happened yet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've seen, and enjoyed Coupling. Breaking Bad and Deadwood, like Mad Men, are both on my short list. I've also heard great things about Big Love.

Speaking of the Emmy's - I was horrified to see Anniston get a nod for her guest appearance on 30 Rock but Amy Ryan not get one for her run as Holly on The Office. I don't have a problem with Anniston, but Ryan is just so good that there's no comparison. Seeing Ryan as Bea on The Wire highlighted just how good she is.

I know that whining about guest star noms is petty, but I do it anyways.

Hi. I also moved to Coria, so I could watch TV shows 12 hours per day.

Weeaboos, you so crazy.

A show from the Great White North that I left off is "Slings and Arrows." It is really good, and it is a short series as well. It starred a young Rachel McAdams before she hit the big time. Paul Gross wasn't bad in it either.
